as the comedian stephen colbert brought his fictionalized late-night tv character to an actual congressional hearing where he had been invited to testify about a single day he spent on a farm courtesy of the farm workers union. he was hardly the first celebrity to testify before congress, but nobody had seen anything quite like this before, and there's never been a climate quite like this one before. our white house correspondent savannah guthrie is here with us in our new york studios with more on this to start us off. >> reporter: as is customary in washington, colbert submitted prepared written remarking before his testimony, and they looked straightforward enough. when he sat down to testify, he went off script and into his comedy routine. and not everyone is laughing tonight. on capitol hill today, more evidence of why some americans think washington is a joke. the comedian stephen colbert, was billed as an expert witness on farm labor. and testified in character. >> congresswoman asked me to share my vast experience, spending one day as a migrant farm worker. i'm happy to use my celebr

. stephen elop takes over as c.e.o. later this month. he was the head of microsoft's biggest division by sales, its business software unit. he takes over a company that sells more mobile phones than anyone else. in the second quarter, nokia's name was on more than one out of every three mobile phones. but, critics say, it is behind in the smartphone market. it is expected to answer critics next week with its n8 smartphone. it will be unveiled in london. one question is whether or not any u.s. carriers have signed on. shares were up 2% on three times its usual volume. the big drop in april came when nokia cut its profit outlook. the trio nokia is competing with for phone software is google, research in motion and apple. tech consultant firm gartner thinks google's android phone software will be the second biggest by the end of this year. nokia remains the biggest. this threesome made fractional moves today. and, the f.d.a. o.k. for a return to the market of a potassium drug provided for some big moves for its maker, k.v. pharmaceutical, and its competitor watson. k.v. rocketed up 74%.

: the prosecution is bringing it's final witnesses this morning in the murder case of stephen haze. the defense will get a chance in a day or two to present a defense for a man who admitted killing jennifer petit. one of the defense attorneys for the other defendant in this case came outside the courthouse and said that thinks client did not sodomize 11-year-old makalia. that was very important, the judge had imposed a gag order. now there is a contempt of court hearing whether or not that gag ordered was violated. fire investigators are now on the stand for the prosecution talking about the burned-out petit home, the home invasion in which the three petit women were killed. the home was set on fire after the crimes were committed. the fire investigators are going over the burn patterns. the legal experts say that the defense will call maybe a witness or two, possibly even stephen haze. at that point both sides will rest and make their closing arguments. the judge says the case could go to the jury as early as friday. tom lewis for fox news. megyn back to you. megyn: thanks, tom. everyone in th

in the bathtub and look at the looking glass and talking about stephen colbert. colbert, the arch conservative commentator. is he conservative? i don't know. the irony is lost on me. he is testifying today before all things, the house subcommittee on immigration. turns out colbert is part of a united farm worker of america called take back our jobs. he wants americans to fill in the jobs that are now taken by illegal immigrants. and to that effect, he went picking beans and packing corn recently in a farm in new york. here's what he had to say on the show about his appearance. >> it's true, i do have a character, but rest assured i will not be addressing congress as my chinese persona ching-chond ding dong. i love tea. >> back to you on the white house. >> all right. >> in all seriousness, i really hope that he isn't testifying in character. it sort of talk about tucker taking congress down a road that is a slippery slope. we will await to see. >> he may want to treat congress as joke. unclear why congress would want to treat itself as a joke. anyway. >>> with prescription drug abuse spiraling

of the suspects, stephen hayes, was, quote, desperate for money. according to a connecticut police detective who interviewed hayes after the murders in july 2007. the detective testified in court today that when he interviewed hayes after the suspects had been caught leaving the petit home, he noted a strong odor of gasoline coming from hayes' body. the home was allegedly set on fire by hayes and co-defendant, so it would make sense there could have been a gasoline odor on him. also hayes showed, quote, no emotion and he remembers him being pretty quiet. >> so the guy was desperate for money, that was their plan all along, just get money? >> it seems so. according to the testimony today, the two men devised a plan to, quote, break into a house, tie some people up, grab some money and get out as fast as they can. well, we know that wasn't what happened in the end. we don't know all the details of course of what happened in that house, but we do know from police that jennifer hawke-petit was sexually assaulted and strangled, that was after the mother of two kaz was captured on the bank camera as s

my call. good morning, stephen. the president has a lot of work to do. the previous caller stating that both parties are not responsible is ridiculous, they're both responsible and the mirror each other in so many ways. i can give you an example of the changes for health care with obama putting through that initiative. a doctor that excised something from a doctor's office for $182, the same person when to the hospital for medication because the pharmacy would not touch it, $500, two separate charges. his eyebrows went up and he said thank you for that information. the parties that are supposed to work together, that is their job. they are supposed to represent all of the people. in terms of compromise, bob dylan says that everyone loves compromise. we started to shed jobs in the 1970's starting with manufacturing. i have one word of advice for the president, it really bothers me when i hear politicians say they are the best. no one is the best. we can be the best sometimes. i cannot handle it, it bothers me a lot and i wish that he would stop saying that. as far as the money, they
